Providenciales attractions -not only sun & beach
Provo has little in the way of historic or cultural attractions; for a real feel for the rich heritage of the TCI, you'll need to head to North or Middle Caicos and, of course, to Grand Turk and Salt Cay. Most of the country's celebrated sports and activities revolve around, unsurprisingly, its ubiquitous resource: all that crystal-clear water with the mesmerizing emerald hue. Try scuba diving the spectacular underwater walls just offshore, fishing the coral reef or deepwater drop-offs, or leisurely exploring the little uninhabited cays and coves that dot the watery landscape. Of course, there are plenty of nonwatersports-related things to do here, including golf, tennis, horseback riding, exploring historical attractions, caving, shopping, and enjoying state-of-the-art spa treatments. Spotting JoJo the Dolphin -- JoJo, a wild Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, is a local celebrity here and acts like one, showing off for visitors as he plays in the waters of Grace Bay. He's even a movie star, having appeared in Nature and In the Wild: Dolphins, both PBS specials, and the 2000 IMAX film Dolphins. He's so famous he's been named a Turks & Caicos National Treasure and as such enjoys protected status. He likes to trail boats, and sightings of JoJo in the clear Grace Bay sea happen almost daily. A whole cottage industry of all things JoJo has sprung up. You can learn more about JoJo and the JoJo Project on the website of the Marine Wildlife Foundation (www.marinewildlife.org), which is dedicated to the research and preservation of dolphins, whales, and all marine wildlife. A bell at Hemingway's on the Beach oceanfront restaurant at The Sands at Grace Bay resort is there for anyone to ring if they spot JoJo. The Conch Farm is located on the isolated eastern end of the island, amid a flat and sunbaked terrain of scrub and sand. This is the only place in the world where conch is commercially produced. The Turks islanders staff gives visitors a short walking tour of the breeding basins -- included is a tour of the hatchery and the laboratories, where more than two million conch reside in ponds in various stages of growth. The tour is modest, but the passion for the cause is palpable. This is truly a hands-on enterprise: It is someone's job to hand-feed food pellets to most of the young conch daily. A gift shop sells rare conch pearls, shell jewelry, and T-shirts. Outside of Kew are the ruins of one of the most successful plantations of the Loyalist era, Wades Green, which was constructed by Florida Loyalist Wade Stubbs around 1789 and eventually grew to 1,214 hectares (3,000 acres). Today you can see the ruins of the stone house, outbuildings, and surrounding walls, pillowed in North Caicos scrub brush. Call the Turks & Caicos National Trust for tours. |
